Dans la pensée russe de la seconde partie du XIXe siècle, Fiodor Dostoïevski (1821-1881) et Vladimir Soloviev (1853-1900) sont deux figures dominantes. Cependant, ils avaient des approches différentes pour interpréter les corrélations entre l'universel et l'individuel, le global (panhumain) et l'universel (tout humain). Ces approches découlent de leurs visions différentes de l'identité.
