Abstract

The critique of absolutism, highlighting the importance of rule of law, and affirming liberties are defining aspects of the liberal political philosophy. Rationalistic demonstrations of the fact that the right political order means limiting power and guaranteeing individual liberty are among the best known achievements of liberal thought. But since the 17th-18th centuries, the search for liberty and rule of law has also been done without neglect of historical realities, experience, particularities or continuity. Fénelon, Montesquieu, Hume, and Blackstone tell us that the order of freedom can be found through moderation, pragmatism and skepticism about the omnipotence of abstract reason.
