Abstract

Different electronic voting systems have different technical features and different weaknesses. In certain circumstances, the need to replace the paper ballot is not evident at all. While policy makers are not always able to resist the temptation to search for technical solutions to political problems, choosing the type of e-voting system to be implemented is not the easiest task. Recent noteworthy developments are pointing toward some primary concerns with the verifiability and security of electronic voting machines. This paper discusses the international experience in the field of electronic voting, trying to emphasize several lessons learned from success and failure.
